چکیده

[1] In this study, we analyze continuous data from all Global Seismographic Network stations between year 2000 and 2009 and demonstrate that several body wave phases (e.g., PP, PcPPKP, SKSP, and PPS) propagating between nearly antipodal station pairs can be clearly observed without array stacking using the noise/coda cross-correlation method. Based on temporal correlations with global seismicity, we show that the observed body waves are clearly earthquake related. Moreover, based on single-earthquake analysis, we show that the earthquake coda energy observed between ~10,000 and 30,000 s after a large earthquake contributes the majority of the signal. We refine our method based on these observations and show that the signal can be significantly improved by selecting only earthquake coda times. With our improved processing, the PKIKP phase, which does not benefit from the focusing effect near the antipode, can now also clearly be observed for long-distance station pairs. Extracting seismic core phases with array interferometry

[1] Seismic body waves that sample Earth’s core are indispensable for studying the most remote regions of the planet. Traditional core phase studies rely on well-defined earthquake signals, which are spatially and temporally limited. We show that, by stacking ambient-noise cross-correlations between USArray seismometers, body wave phases reflected off the outer core (ScS), and twice refracted t...

The lack of equipartitioning in global body wave coda

Correlation of the coda of large earthquakes can be used to retrieve body waves at teleseismic distances. This retrieval depends on waves propagating with equal energy in all directions (equipartitioning). We carry out a beamforming analysis of body waves at periods of 10 and 40 s recorded at USArray and show that the late coda, up to 10 h after the Okhotsk earthquake, is dominated by waves pro...

Seismic interferometry and stationary phase at caustics

Waves that propagate between two receivers can be extracted by cross correlating noise recorded at these receivers if the noise is generated by sources on a closed surface surrounding the receivers. This concept is called seismic interferometry. Of all these noise sources, those for whom the travel time difference for propagation to the two receivers is in the stationary phase zone, give the do...

Relative seismic velocity variations correlate with deformation at Kīlauea volcano

Seismic noise interferometry allows the continuous and real-time measurement of relative seismic velocity through a volcanic edifice. Because seismic velocity is sensitive to the pressurization state of the system, this method is an exciting new monitoring tool at active volcanoes. Despite the potential of this tool, no studies have yet comprehensively compared velocity to other geophysical obs...

SVD enhanced seismic interferometry for traveltime estimates between microquakes

In general, Green’s functions obtained with seismic interferometry are only estimates of the true Green’s function, introducing uncertainties to the information recovered from them. However, there are still many cases in which the sourcereceiver geometries are suitable for seismic interferometry, usually allowing the recovery of kinematic information. Here we show how to use the singular value ...
